I recently received an e-mail from a friend warning me to be careful when conducting ATM transactions. Apparently, thieves have devised a creative way of getting your ATM and PIN without you suspecting anything and in turn draining your bank account.

Dadaab, 12 April 2012 (IRIN) – A mix of cultural practices, such as early and forced marriage, as well as child labour, are depriving girls of education in the Dadaab refugee complex in eastern Kenya.

Out of Dadaab’s estimated population of 463,000 mainly Somali refugees, more than half are children under 18; of these about 38 percent attend school.

The proportion of girls in the camps’ primary and secondary schools is 38 and 27 percent, respectively, according to the UN Refugee Agency. Nakuru 11th April 2012 (PLUSNEWS) – The Kenyan government has issued guidelines on counselling for HIV-discordant couples, but many counsellors in smaller, rural health centres remain untrained.

“HIV infection among discordant couples will increase without adequate counselling because… it is only through counselling that they learn to live with each other, and use preventive measures such as condoms consistently,” said Churchill Alumasa, the coordinator at the local NGO, Discordant Couples of Kenya (DISCOK).

According to the government, six out of every 10 HIV-positive couples are discordant, amounting to an estimated 350,000 couples.

23-year-old wife in Kileleshwa has been arrested. Dokta Peter

Longa was arrested in one of his houses within Kileleshwa on Friday and is expected in court today according to the police.

Nairobi provincial police commander Antony Kibuchi confirmed the suspect was apprehended and locked behind police cells following an immigration alert that the man was likely to live the country. “He (Longa) is scheduled to appear in Kibera Court on Monday. Investigators have already drafted several charges,” said Kibuchi.

Jasmine Abdalla Shariff recorded a statement with the police claiming Longa had battered her for 12 hours and left her bleeding profusely. She went to the police accompanied by her relatives, human rights and an advocate. Brian Weke of Cradle Kenya said Jasmine was traumatized a week after being treated and discharged from the Nairobi Hospital.
