Thursday, 24th March 2011- 12pm,Kenya Society for the Mentally Handicapped offices at Kabete Orthopaedic Compound, Waiyaki Way, Westlands, Nairobi.
On this day, parents of Kenyans with mental disabilities annouced a demostration against the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Development. The demonstrators, led by Kenya Society for Mentally Handicapped Chief Executive Edna Maina are are unhappy the Ministry of Gender has been issuing empty promises regarding Kshs. 200 million allocated to mentally challenged Kenyans in year 2009. The parents expressed shock PS Ministry of Gender has even changed the name of the cash transfer from “mentally challenged” to “severe disabilities” thus putting the money allocated to the mentally challenged into different use. Doctors told Joyce Kiarie that her son will never live beyond his eighth birthday, when Women eNews Kenya caught up with her at the Kenya Society for the Mentally Handicapped offices at Kabete Orthopaedic Compound, she told us her son, Milton Kiarie is now 10 years. Joyce story is heart wretching and painful, deserted by husband and disowned by her parents, the first time she realised Milton was struggling with celebral palsy was when he was 9 month old, she tell Women eNews Kenya how she was detained at Kenyatta National Hospital due to accumulation of medical bill but managed to run away with her baby.

Amina Musa is a parent of a 20 year old boy, Adna Saad, She lives in Mathare area, Nairobi, she says her son’s condition was first noted when he was 7 months old, she describes him as a quite and jovial boy, at some time, he shows no sign of mental problems while at times, she burst and becomes overwhelmed, Musa says her son must eb accompanied to board the school bus and cannot board a matatu is the school bus leave him

Catherine Nunga is a resident of Mathare Mlango Kubwa in Nairobi, she has a 15 year old son, Martin Irungu, she tells Women eNews Kenya that she has never heard her son speak, Catherine cannot do her work at peace, she constantly worries whereabout of her son even though he is enrolled at the Mathare Special School
