Stop Beating Your Husbands, FIDA Now Says

February, Thursday 16th 2012  – FIDA Kenya would like to condemn the rising cases of reported domestic violence. We are particularly concerned by the incident in Nyeri County where a husband was brutally attacked by his wife with a panga.

While we seek to protect women’s rights, we strongly condemn any sort of violence – whether meted by a man or a woman.

FIDA Kenya has been lobbying for the enactment of a domestic violence law in Kenya since 1997 and there has been strong opposition to the same.

We hope that the latest events in the country will convince parliamentarians on the need for the Family Protection Bill and that the passage of this law will be fast tracked by the Commission for the Implementation of the Constitution and the National Assembly.

  1. Violence is wrong regardless of who the perpetrators are. The Penal code, the Sexual Offences Act and other laws should be applied per individual case. However the society should recognise that Gender-based violence is about power relations and control within the family union and appreciate that both males and females, from all backgrounds, religious inclinations, geographical backgrounds, need to work together to eliminate the vice.
