Do You Remember Her, Baby Lexie Is Back

Nairobi, October 6th 2011 –  Women eNews Kenya published this story in July, After Rose Nasimiyu, We Got A 3 Year Old Baby Lexie, Today we join the family of Alexandra Ajowi, popularly known as Baby Lexy in welcoming her back from India where she has been for the last 11 month battling leukemia.

Africa Cancer Foundation (ACF) is pleased to announce the return of little Alexandra Ajowi (Baby Lexy) to Nairobi on Saturday 8 October, 2011 at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (J.K.I.A) at 1P.M.

Baby Lexy has successfully completed her treatment in India but will continue to need special care and further treatment.

Baby Lexy will be received at the airport by members of Africa Cancer Foundation (A.C.F) and family members. A.C.F. was launched on the 12th of July, 2011 by the Minister of Medical Services Hon. Prof. P. Anyang’ Nyong’o, founding Chairman.

Alexandra Ajowi, popularly known as Baby Lexy, a 4-year-old baby girl, was diagnosed with Leukemia in November 2010 while admitted at the Nairobi Hospital.

Baby Lexie and her mother, Dr. Angela Awino McLigeyo were subsequently admitted at the Apollo Specialty Hospital in Chennai, India on 12December, 2010.

The child who was critically ill stayed in Immuno-Intensive Care Unit, a special isolation ward meant for patients without immunity, up to the end of February 2011.

Alexandra successfully completed four courses of chemotherapy at a cost of ksh. 4.0 Million.

Baby Alexandra was later admitted for a Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) on 25 May, 2011.

The procedure took 28 days. Baby Lexy remained in the hospital I.C.U and General Ward up to 4 October, 2011 when she was discharged after she stabilized.

The discharge medications for Lexy cost the family USD 3000. After a 50% discount from the New York Blood Centre, the outstanding bill for the Stem Cell transplant is USD 17,500.

The family has paid a deposit of USD 5,000 and will need to raise the remaining USD 12,000 to complete the payment. The total cost of Lexy’s treatment so far has been USD 163,000 (KSH.16, 626,000)

The family is grateful for the support received from family and friends and continues to rely on this support to clear the outstanding medical bill.
