Women Bathing In A Lake

Mbita, April 7th 2011 – We could not understand why this happened but on close analysis we linked the incident to lack of water at household level and poverty.

This story is brief, and sourced from a court room, we leave it to you to debate and comment on who should be blamed, is it the government for not scalling up access to water at household level or the women for polluting the enviroment.

Women Bathing In A Lake

Fourteen Women were today fined a total of shs.98, 000 by a Homa bay court for bathing in Lake Victoria and causing pollution to public water supply.

The women were charged that on April 5th 2011 at Rusinga Island in Mbita district in Homa bay County, they were found bathing, washing utensils and clothes in Lake Victoria knowing that their actions were dangerous and injurious to the public.

The case was brought before resident magistrate James Ong’ondo by the Ministry of Public health Officials based in Mbita town in collaboration with the police.

The arrest comes barely a week after Mbita Public health officer. Mathews Ajwala warned the residents against bathing and washing in the lake.

They were each fined shs.7, 000.
