Woman Battered over Harmless Phone Call

Lilian Mwende is in agony after she was brutally battered by her husband early this week over a call from an anonymous person in her cell phone.

The caller had concealed the identity.

Mwende , a 29 year old  mother of two residing at Changamwe in Mombasa county has been married for three years, she told this reporter that his husband has been beating her since the birth of their first child.

Her communication with any of her relatives has also been cut off, Lilian who is also the 14th wife in a come we stay kind of relationship to the guy said that her situation this week worsened when her
husband answered a phone call on her mobile phone.

“Immediately he picked the phone, the other end may have heard unusual voice and remained silence” she narrates.

Angered by the lack of response from the caller he grabbed her, tied her to the bed, covered her mouth using a piece of cloth and started raining blows on her.

She says her husband wanted to cut her with the knife he had fetched from the kitchen, but luckily, she managed to untie herself and sought help from her neighbor.

She later sought refuge from her aunt in Magongo who took her to Changamwe Police Station to report the abuse, the police wrote a brief note on a piece of paper and asked her to go for medical check up at the hospital.

Lilian says she went back to her husband’s house after treatment but the husband threatened to kill her.

“He wanted to burn the note from the police” says Lilian.

It was Grace Odembo, a  gender activist in Mombasa who decided the abuse cannot be wished away, she sought the media attention to highlight Lilian’s predicament.

Grace says Lilian’s case is one of many unreported women abuses in the area, she says there are
several other cases of wife battering in Changamwe which are not acted upon blaming the situation on  drug abuse.

Odembo confessed that she has many similar cases of such nature which she is ready to reveal to both media and voluntary people who can assist.
