Women To Take Over Leadership

Machakos County, March 18, 2011 Women in Lower Eastern province will fight it out with men for political positions in the next general election.

Kathiani Member of Parliament (MP) Wavinya Ndeti who has declared her interest in the governorship of Machakos County said that women in the area would no longer accept to be consigned to the periphery of leadership in all sectors.

Ndeti was emphatic that women are endowed with qualities of leadership but have been fettered by cultural and customary inhibitions.

The legislator who is also Assistant Minister for Youth and Sports, challenged women in the area to exploit their leadership talents by vying for available posts noting that despite the already promulgated Constitution guaranteeing them special seats in elective post and governance positions they should also prove them worth.

She cited girls performance in last years Kenya Certificate of Secondary Examination (K.C.S.E), where Machakos Girls High School was ranked position 96, while Alliance girls walloped their brothers at Alliance boys.

The larger Machakos Branch Maendeleo ya Wanawake Organisation (MYWO) chairlady however cautioned women aspiring for leadership that integrity is a virtue that one must posses to earn respect and confidence of whom they purport to either lead or represent regardless of gender.

The chairlady said that there was no power gender struggle for power or leadership adding that women in the area were shedding the notion of weaker sex to which they have been subjected to by retrogressive customs and biased traditional beliefs on the role of women.
